Man is it a bitch when democracy backfires. My favorite quotes of the day:
"[Hamas] said they would not recognize or negotiate with Israel and remained committed to its destruction." Much funnier if you imagine it being read by a BBC announcer in a calm, soothing manner.
"In Washington, both President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticized Hamas for refusing to renounce terrorist tactics and to accept the existence of Israel." I imagine the Hamas party standing on the Israeli-Palestinian border with fingers in their ears, going, "Na na na na, I can't hear you, I can't hear you," only in Arabic.
I realize that this is a serious situation, and that the election of terrorists into a governmental party is a dire situation, but I'm pretty sure that's the same way that Kosovo Afghanistan felt about the US when we were bombing the shit out of their countries. What I find humor in is not the fact that it's happened, although it is amusing that these people were fairly elected, essentially ushered in by 76 percent of the population, but the way in which it's reported, as though we can sit calmly and speak politely to one another about the eradication of a country, its people, its culture, and its way of life. The contrast between content and style is hilarious to me.
I'm going to learn about Palestine now.
